Hidden Water Damage

In recent years, there’s been an influx of water restoration companies who are looking to get into a market they see as very lucrative.  But with that comes inexperience and a total lack of proper equipment.  Home owners who had water damage to their homes are calling us months later with mold growth in the same area that was previously remediated by other companies.  Too often these so called water restoration firms are leaving damaged areas untreated either because they can not visibly see damage, they don’t have the proper instruments to detect water, or they simply just don’t know any better.  What happens later is that untreated water damaged cavity now becomes a breeding ground for mold and more money will have to be spent to properly fix the issue.

When you search for a water restoration company, it’s completely understandable that you may be in a panic especially if you have hundreds if not thousands of gallons of water in your home due to a flood or plumbing issue, but patience and due diligence are still required so you hire the right company.  Here’s a couple of quick questions to ask a company to see if they’re the right fit for you:

  • Are you licensed, insured and certified to do this type of work?
  • Where was your certification for water damage obtained and can I have a copy?
  • What sort of methods will you use to insure that all the water is completely extracted and my home will be dried?
  • Do you have any references?
  • Have you worked with insurance companies before and if so are you an approved vendor?

There’s many other questions you can ask any contractor, but this will get you started. Call their insurance company to make sure that their policy is up to date, and check the dates on their certifications and look up where they were obtained.  Also, do an extensive search on the internet to gain a better view of the company.  It may seem like a lot to do when you still have water to deal with, but not doing your research can lead to you having more damage later down the road.
